Bump caps are designed primarily to provide protection from injuries caused by hitting fixed objects (e.g. walking into low ceilings or hanging obstructions). Caps do not provide sufficient protection against falling objects and can only be used in situations where a safety helmet is not obligatory as per EN 397. 

 

The following requirements must be met if helmets are certified according to EN 812:

• Shock absorption (Front & Back - at 30° and 60 °) must be provided.

• They must have a certain penetration resistance to sharp and pointed objects.
